YOKOHAMA--Pokemon players from around the world will try to catch ’em all at the Pokemon World Championships here in August.

The annual e-sports tournament is a headline event for card-carrying Pokemon fans, who will compete in four games.

This year it takes place for the first time in Asia.

It will run from Aug. 11 to 13 at the Pacifico Yokohama facility in the Minato Mirai 21 waterfront district, Nishi Ward.

More than 1,000 players are expected. They will compete in games including "Pokemon Scarlet and Violet," which has sold over 20 million units worldwide.

There’ll be a buzz across the city, too. The city government has concluded an agreement with The Pokemon Co. to organize events that celebrate the cartoon clan.

At Rinko Park, a traditional Bon odori dance and other events will take place on an elevated stage that has a Poke Ball motif. Eight hundred drones will perform a light show. And 100 Pikachus will parade through Keyakidori avenue.

Ticket holders should guard their good luck. Applications for some events are now closed.
