NUMATA, Gunma Prefecture—Two male shoppers were injured when they were attacked by a bear that lumbered into a grocery store near a railway station here on Oct. 7.
The bear, about 1.4 meters in length, ran off to the south from the store.
A witness called police around 7:30 p.m. to report that a bear was on top of a person at the Fressay Numata Onda supermarket here.
According to police and firefighters, one of the victims, who is in his 70s, was taken to a hospital in Numata after sustaining scratch-like injuries across both arms.
“I heard a noise and turned around to find a bear,” the man was quoted as telling the fire department. “I am not sure if it was a full-grown bear or a cub, but it looked like a cub.”
Although he was wearing a long-sleeved shirt, the sleeves were torn and blood was seeping through.
The supermarket is about two kilometers north of JR Numata Station.
