A bear entered a supermarket in northeastern Japan and mauled a man who worked there.
Police said the 47-year-old employee suffered head and facial injuries, but was listed in a stable condition at hospital.
The animal was still inside the store in Akita Prefecture as of 9 a.m. on Dec. 1.
Twenty-one employees of the Itoku Tsuchizaki Minato Store in central Akita, near Akita Port, were preparing to open for the day at 6:30 a.m. on Nov. 30 when an emergency call was made to police reporting the attack.
City government workers set up box traps at two entrances to the store.
According to the police, a store employee found the injured man and carried him outside to the back of the store for safety even though the bear was nearby.
At the time of attack, the store was closed and there were no shoppers.
Staff members said the bear was about 1 meter long.
The supermarket is located in the city center, about 200 meters west of National Route 7.
