Strong Typhoon No. 10 continued barreling toward southern Japan on a northwest path on the morning of Aug. 26 with landfall expected the following day, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. 

The typhoon is expected to approach the Amami region of Kagoshima Prefecture and western Japan after Aug. 27, bringing heavy rains to western and eastern regions.

The JMA is advising people in the regions to stay alert over the potential for landslides, flooding of low-lying areas and overflowing rivers. 

Rail services including bullet trains may also be affected as well as airlines. 

The JMA said Typhoon No. 10 was traveling northwest over the Pacific Ocean south of Japan at 20 kph as of 9 a.m. on Aug. 26.

It had a central pressure of 980 hectopascals and a maximum wind speed of 126 kph near the center, with the maximum instantaneous wind speed reaching 180 kph as of the morning.

Within a radius of 55 kilometers from its center, the typhoon was packing strong winds of 90 kph or more as of 9 a.m. on Aug. 26.

The typhoon is likely to develop and change course to head northward in southern Kyushu after Aug. 27, and pass over western and eastern Japan on around Aug. 30 and 31.

In response, Japan Railway companies have announced possible disruptions of train services. 

Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) warned that its operations of the Tokaido Shinkansen Line may be suspended at times for long periods from Aug. 28 to 29.

West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) said that the Sanyo Shinkansen Line may be suspended for long periods at times from Aug. 28 to 30.

However, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) announced its plan to operate the Joetsu and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines, as well as the Tohoku Shinkansen Line, as usual on Aug. 28 and 29.

The railway companies said they will change their plans according to the latest weather forecasts.

As for airlines, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways announced possible disruptions in flights arriving at or departing from airports in the Kyushu and Kinki regions after Aug. 27.
