Kyushu Railway Co. (JR Kyushu) will suspend Kyushu Shinkansen service between Kumamoto Station and Kagoshima Chuo Station from the afternoon of Aug. 8 as it braces for approaching Typhoon No. 6. 

The suspension will start after the inbound train departing Kagoshima Chuo Station at 1:45 p.m. for Shin-Osaka Station and the outbound train departing Shin-Osaka Station at 9:20 a.m. for Kagoshima Chuo Station. 

On the morning of Aug. 8, Typhoon No. 6 was moving slowly north-northwest about 160 kilometers east-northeast of Amami, Kagoshima Prefecture.

The typhoon is expected to maintain its strength as it approaches Kyushu, bringing heavy rain with thunderstorms to southern Kyushu and the Amami region through Aug. 9, and to western Japan through around Aug. 10. 

As of 8 a.m. on Aug. 8, the typhoon had a central pressure of 970 hectopascals, a maximum wind speed of 108 kph, and a maximum instantaneous wind speed of 144 kph near the center.

Within a 200-km radius of the center, winds at speeds of 90 kph were blowing.

JR Kyushu announced that Kyushu Shinkansen service between Hakata Station and Kumamoto Station will be operated as usual. 

According to West Japan Railway Co. (JR West), the Sanyo Shinkansen is running normally as of 8:50 a.m. on Aug. 8, with the possibility of planned service suspension of the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka Station and Hakata Station from the evening of Aug. 9 to the morning of Aug. 10.

Japan Airlines Co. and All Nippon Airways Co. announced the cancellation of 132 and 32 flights to and from Kyushu respectively as of 9 a.m. on Aug. 8.
