Tokyo posted 10,334 new COVID-19 cases and seven related deaths on Feb. 14, along with a slight rise in serious cases.
The latest daily count of new cases, 1,877 fewer than the previous Monday, marked the sixth consecutive day of decline from the figure for a week ago, metropolitan health officials said.
The daily average of new cases over the week through Feb. 14 was 15,446.3, representing 84.9 percent of the number for the preceding week.
But the number of serious cases, a lagging indicator, rose by nine from the previous day to 74, officials said. The Tokyo metropolitan government defines patients in serious condition as those requiring ventilators or ECMO heart-lung bypass machines.
The seven patients who died are in their 70s or older.
Osaka Prefecture reported 7,997 new cases on Feb. 14, the third consecutive day of decrease from the same day a week ago.
Nine patients died from the disease, prefectural officials said.
Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura the same day ruled out asking the central government to declare a state of emergency over the virus for the prefecture to grapple with the pandemic, citing the drop in case numbers over the past week.
