Tokyo reported the highest number of COVID-19 cases for a Saturday with 21,122 as well as 10 related deaths on Feb. 5.

The figure for new infections was the second highest daily tally next to the 21,576 of Feb. 2.

Authorities in Osaka Prefecture reported 10,918 cases on Feb. 5, the fifth straight day of more than 10,000 new cases in the western Japan prefecture. They also confirmed 23 deaths the same day in Osaka.

In Tokyo, for the week ending Feb. 5, the daily average of new cases was 17,895.1, an increase of 29.8 percent over the previous week’s average.

Metropolitan government officials said 10 deaths linked to COVID-19 were confirmed on Feb. 5. The last time fatalities were in double digits was on Oct. 29 when there were 12.

Of the latest cases in the capital, 543 were confirmed by doctors told about the symptoms by the individuals who were not tested.

By age group, those in their 30s accounted for 3,778 cases, followed by 3,758 in their 20s and 3,678 in their 40s.

Cases involving children under the age of 10 came to 3,070, while the figure for those in their 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s was under 1,000.

Tokyo officials said 55.1 percent of the hospital beds set aside for COVID-19 patients were in use.

Forty-four patients had symptoms serious enough to require the use of a ventilator or other equipment to breathe. The figure was an increase of three from the previous day.
