Tokyo reported 18,287 COVID-19 new cases on Feb. 9, down more than 3,000 from a week ago when the number surged past 20,000 for the first time, and 11 new deaths from the disease.

The latest count marked the 16th consecutive day that daily new cases surpassed 10,000, Tokyo metropolitan health officials said.

But it was 3,289 fewer than the number the same day a week ago, when a record 21,576 cases were recorded in Tokyo.

Of the 18,287 new cases, 632 were “deemed positive,” patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 by doctors without being tested due to a shortage of test kits.

The daily average of tests conducted by health authorities over the three days until Feb. 7 was 20,562.0.

Patients younger than 10 accounted for 3,157 new cases, the largest age group of the infected. They were followed by 2,997 patients in their 30s, 2,995 in their 40s and 2,899 in their 20s.

The number of serious cases based on the definition of the Tokyo metropolitan government rose eight from the day before to 59. They are patients requiring ventilators or ECMO heart-lung bypass machines.

In Osaka Prefecture, 15,264 new cases and 31 related deaths were reported the same day.
