FUKUOKA--Ozeki Kotozakura won his first Emperor’s Cup, besting fellow ozeki Hoshoryu on Nov. 24 on the final day of the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.
Both ozeki entered the final day with identical 13-1 records, but Kotozakura withstood an arm throw by his opponent who slipped and fell on his hands.
Kotozakura is a sumo thoroughbred. His grandfather was a yokozuna who used the same ring name. His father, who fought as Kotonowaka, is now his stable master, Sadogatake.
The wrestler took over the Kotozakura name from the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in May this year after gaining promotion to ozeki after the January tournament.
If Kotozakura wins the New Year’s Grand Sumo Tournament in January, he would be in line for promotion to yokozuna.
