Tokyo reported slightly fewer cases of COVID-19 on Jan. 23 compared with the day before, but the 9,468 figure was still a record for a Sunday and about 2.3 times that of the previous week, metropolitan health officials said.
The seven-day average of new cases for the week through Jan. 23 came to 7,901.9, a 2.8-fold increase over the preceding week.
While the capital’s daily figure dipped slightly from a record 11,227 on Jan. 22, neighboring Kanagawa and Chiba prefectures both set records on Jan. 23.
Kanagawa reported 3,794 cases, up from the previous high of 3,409 set on Jan. 21, while Chiba confirmed 2,382 cases, compared with 2,296 the day before.
The same day, Osaka Prefecture logged 6,219 new cases, 2,459 more than the previous Sunday, while Aichi Prefecture posted 3,050, the first time for its daily count to top 3,000 for a Sunday.
