For the third consecutive day, Tokyo logged a new record of COVID-19 cases on Jan. 21 with the surging number nearing 10,000, while Osaka Prefecture also announced a record number.

Metropolitan government officials reported 9,699 fresh cases as pre-emergency measures started in the capital to deal with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

For the week through Jan. 21, the daily average of new cases in Tokyo was 6,193, which was about 3.2 times the average of the previous week.

There were no fatalities from COVID-19 reported on Jan. 21 in the capital, but 11 patients had symptoms serious enough to require the use of a ventilator or other equipment to breathe. The figure was an increase of two from the previous day.

Meanwhile, Osaka Prefecture officials said 6,254 new cases were confirmed on Jan. 21, breaking the record of 6,101 set two days earlier.
