Tokyo on Aug. 2 confirmed 292 new infections of the novel coronavirus, down significantly from the record 472 set the previous day.
It was the first time for the daily tally in the capital to fall below 300 since July 29, when 250 new cases were confirmed.
Tokyo metropolitan government officials were closely watching the Aug. 2 figure. The 472 cases reported on Aug. 1, which broke the record of 463 confirmed the previous day, appeared to reflect the number of people who became infected over the four-day weekend from July 23-26.
The daily figures announced by the Tokyo metropolitan government more or less reflect the results of tests conducted three days earlier.
According to preliminary statistics, more than 5,100 tests for the virus were conducted three days ago on July 30.
