A record 982 new daily COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Japan on July 28, with some prefectures reporting their highest single-day infections.

The daily tally as of 11:30 p.m. exceeded the previous high of 981 recorded on July 23.

The latest figure for Tokyo topped 200 for the first time in two days, with 266 new infections. Osaka Prefecture confirmed 155 new cases, and Aichi Prefecture saw 110, both breaking also their record highs for a single day.

The Osaka prefectural government the same day implored residents not to attend parties, including drinking sessions, with five or more participants from Aug. 1 through 20.

“The central government urges the public to ‘refrain from dining in a large group,’ but it has to give a (specific) number of participants,” Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said.

Aichi Governor Hideaki Omura also expressed a sense of crisis regarding the surge in infections at a July 28 news conference, saying, “I understand that we are now in a totally different world.”

Omura said residents “should not attend parties or have dinners involving many people.”

Okinawa Prefecture also reported its highest daily number of cases. Governor Denny Tamaki urged residents to take thorough infection prevention measures when dining with or spending an extended period with people from Tokyo and 16 prefectures where infections are continuing to spread.
