Confirmed novel coronavirus infections in Tokyo hit a record 472 cases on Aug. 1, the metropolitan government said.

It marked the second straight day for the capital to witness a daily count of above 400.

On July 31, 463 new cases were confirmed.

The number has remained above 300 for three consecutive days.

The daily count that the metropolitan government releases reflects test results from about three days previously.

The number of confirmed cases tends to become higher when more tests are conducted.

On July 29, more than 5,100 tests were carried out, according to the metropolitan government.

Total cases of COVID-19 infection in Tokyo in July came to 6,466, exceeding the April record of 3,748 cases.
