The total number of COVID-19 cases in Japan surpassed 30,000 on July 25 as Okinawa and Okayama prefectures saw new daily highs, suggesting the disease is spreading to other regions besides Tokyo and Osaka.

The nation's daily novel coronavirus count stood at 807 as of 11:10 p.m. on July 25. That raised the total to 30,616 including those who tested positive aboard the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship in Yokohama Port in February.

There were four deaths of COVID-19 patients the same day.

Tokyo registered 295 new cases on July 25, the fifth straight day of reporting more than 200 cases.

Of the number, the transmission route was unknown for 165 patients.

The metropolitan government is seeing a surge in cases this month as more coronavirus tests are being conducted.

The tally on July 25 marked the 12th day that more than 200 infections have been reported in the capital in July.

The number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients rose to 1,105 in Tokyo as of July 25, 3.9 times the number on July 1.

The Osaka prefectural government reported 132 cases on July 25, the prefecture’s second highest number for a single day, following the 149 confirmed on July 24.

Local regions are also seeing numbers spiking, with 14 cases reported in Okinawa and 10 in Okayama Prefecture, both daily highs.

In Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, an additional 30 people tested positive after having close contact with those whose infections were confirmed in outbreaks at two venues, a cabaret club and restaurant.

Akita Prefecture reported a new case on July 25, the first patient since April 14.

In Kagoshima Prefecture, Governor Satoshi Mitazono cautioned people in and outside the prefecture not to travel to Yoron island, which is just north of Okinawa Prefecture, as the number of patients has increased to 29 by July 25 due to cluster infections there.
