Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike announced on July 31 that a daily record 463 new COVID-19 cases were counted in the capital, continuing the recent alarming spike to end the month.
She added that the total for July was 6,466, which greatly exceeded the previous monthly record of 3,748 of April.
July 31 marked the fourth straight day of 200 or more new COVID-19 cases and the 23rd consecutive day of the count topping 100 new cases. The capital reported a record 367 cases on July 30.
It normally takes about three days for Tokyo metropolitan government officials to confirm and compile results of tests to check for COVID-19 infections. Officials said about 5,500 people took tests on July 28, partly accounting for the sharp surge in new cases on July 31.
