Actress Kasumi Arimura will play Tomoe Yukishiro, the titular character's ex-wife, in the final two-part, live-action film adaptation of the "Rurouni Kenshin" swashbuckler manga and anime franchise.
The two films will be premiered back to back in the summer. "Rurouni Kenshin Saishusho: The Final" will open nationwide on July 3, followed by "Rurouni Kenshin Saishusho: The Beginning" on Aug. 7.
"The Final" is based on the final "Jinchu" (punishment by people) story arc of the original manga by Nobuhiro Watsuki, featuring the showdown between Kenshin and Enishi. "The Beginning" is adapted from the "Tsuioku" (remembrance) arc, in which the swordsman narrates his past to reveal the secret behind the cross-shaped scar on his face.
In the latest film adaptations, Himura Kenshin, who was a feared assassin called Hitokiri Battosai, leads a peaceful life carrying a reverse-blade sword to protect people in need of assistance after the advent of a new era. But a series of attacks is launched by an unknown assailant in the heart of Tokyo, putting Kenshin and his friends in danger.
Arimura plays Tomoe, who is brutally killed by Kenshin during his time as the ruthless assassin. She is closely associated with the cross-shaped scar on his face and is also the reason behind Enishi's personal vendetta against Kenshin.
The protagonist is portrayed by Takeru Sato, who has also played the character in the past three live-action film adaptations.
