New coronavirus cases in Tokyo topped 100 for the fifth consecutive day on April 12 as the total number of infections across Japan soared past 7,000 on the day.

As of 10 p.m. on April 12, 166 new cases were confirmed in Tokyo and 499 across the nation.

Although the overall number of daily cases across Japan dropped from the record high of 719 from the day before, the high numbers in Tokyo and other areas on April 12 show that infections continue to surge across the nation.

The total number of confirmed cases in Japan, excluding those among passengers of the quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship and travelers who underwent quarantine at airports, reached 7,268 in Tokyo and 45 prefectures.

Tokyo marked over 100 new cases for five days in a row from April 8 and now has more than 2,000 infections in total.

In Sendai, five preschoolers and elementary school students were confirmed to test positive for the new coronavirus, but none were in serious condition.

Among the prefectures under the state of emergency declared April 7, Osaka had 45 new cases, while Chiba recorded 44, Saitama totaled 40, Kanagawa had 31 and Fukuoka recorded 30.
