Japan confirmed 743 new infections of the novel coronavirus on April 11, a record daily high, as well as 12 deaths from COVID-19, a respiratory disease caused by the virus, health authorities said.
Tokyo renewed its daily high for the fourth straight day with 197 new infections. The route of the transmission was not clear for nearly 80 percent of those cases.
Kanagawa Prefecture, just south of Tokyo, reported 76 new cases, also a record for a single day.
Osaka Prefecture said 70 people tested positive on April 11.
The numbers, based on a tally as of 11:45 p.m. on April 11, indicate the contagion is fast spreading in urban centers.
Two deaths each were recorded in Ibaraki, Chiba, Aichi and Kyoto prefectures.
The overall number of coronavirus infections in Japan was 7,644, including those on the Diamond Princess cruise ship.
The death toll from COVID-19 was 145.
