KYOTO—Kodaiji temple in Higashiyama Ward here held a test run of an out of this world light show on Oct. 23 ahead of its annual autumn night viewing, which will start on Oct. 25.

The temple will use projection mapping, floodlights and sound equipment to transform the garden of the Hojo main hall into a mysterious, unearthly world.

This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of Kita no Mandokoro (1548-1624), who founded the temple to mourn her late husband, the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-1598).

This year’s night show was created to express the theme “pray” as a special act of mourning for the founder. It will also project the kanji for “sky” or “the spiritual concept of nothingness,” which is an important teaching of Buddhism.

Entrance to the special night viewing will be open from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. until Dec. 15.

Admission will be 600 yen ($4) for adults.
