KYOTO--About 500 lights were turned on at Kiyomizudera temple in Kyoto, a World Heritage site, on Nov. 16 in preparation for the special autumn nighttime viewing.
On a cliff of Mount Otowa, the main hall, a national treasure known as “Kiyomizu no Butai,” and the surrounding 1,000 maple trees were spectacularly lit up.
It created an ethereal atmosphere as a spotlight shone to the west, where the Pure Land is believed to be located.
According to the temple, the maple trees changed color this year a bit later than usual and will be at their best toward the end of this month.
A special nighttime viewing will be held from Nov. 18 to 30. Admission is 400 yen ($2.70) for adults and 200 yen for elementary and junior high school students.
