Parts of Japan were thrown into chaos by the CrowdStrike outage that triggered a series of abnormal shutdowns of Windows-based computers.
Jetstar Airways Pty Ltd. canceled around 20 domestic flights on July 19 due to a system failure.
With the computer system at the airline’s counter at Fukuoka Airport in Fukuoka not working, staff had to create handwritten boarding passes with passengers’ names and destinations.
“All the other airlines’ flights are full. I’m in trouble,” said a 32-year-old man from Chiba Prefecture after he was told at the counter that the flight he was scheduled to take may be canceled.
Japan Airlines temporarily stopped accepting reservations, as well as flight changes and cancelations, for international flights on the website.
Reservations for domestic flights using air miles were also put on hold for a while.
West Japan Railway Co. (JR West) said its computerized system showing the locations of trains running on its website and app failed. Trains running in some parts of the Kinki area were not displayed.
At Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, there was a glitch in the POS system that manages sales records at the cash registers. Almost all restaurants and stores in the park temporarily suspended operations.
