Many areas of the Tokai region reported record-breaking high temperatures on Sept. 28 with the mercury exceeding a sizzling 35 degrees. 

The records marked the latest day in the year for the Tokai region to be suffering under extremely hot weather. 

The thermometer hit 36 degrees in Shizuoka and 35.3 degrees in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture, on the day, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The mercury soared to 34.7 degrees as of 4 p.m. in Otsuki, Yamanashi Prefecture.

Kochi in the Shikoku region saw a high of 34.6 degrees, while Ichihara and Kamogawa, both in Chiba Prefecture, recorded highs of 34.3 degrees.

About 300 locations nationwide experienced temperatures exceeding 30 degrees despite it being late September.

In Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, an elementary school made an emergency call to medical services at around 11:15 a.m. on the same day, reporting that some of their students felt unwell.

Thirty students reported heat stroke-like symptoms, according to the city’s fire department.

There were no reports of severe cases.

The city’s board of education said a sports festival was being held at the elementary school from morning to noon on the day.

The temperature in Hikone was 31.1 degrees at 11 a.m., according to the local meteorological observatory.
