NAHA--The first column was raised on Sept. 4 for the reconstruction of the main hall of Shuri-jo castle, which was destroyed in a devastating early morning blaze four years ago.
Media representatives were allowed to watch the raising of the approximately 500-kilogram cypress column that is 7 meters long with a radius of about 30 centimeters.
It will be the first of 513 columns and beams to be used for the framework of the Seiden (Main Hall).
Plans call for completion of the castle in autumn 2026.
