KYOTO--A cafe that opened in a historic building that used to be the home of the prefectural government here reckons it has all the ingredients to be regarded as “instagrammable.”

Situated in the city’s Kamigyo Ward, prefectural officials hope the cafe will revitalize the area surrounding the state-designated important cultural property.

The area is dotted with museums and other sites of cultural interest. Even though it is one of a few places in the area to rest one’s feet, it is visited by relatively few tourists because it is not well known.

The building itself is a popular photo spot for wedding receptions and cosplayers. Until the COVID-19 pandemic hit, it was booked for around 200 events every year.

Officials understand that people often hesitate to casually drop by because the cafe is located on the premises of the prefectural government office.

Named in tribute to the year the building was erected, the “salon de 1904” cafe opened on July 26.

Located in the southeast corner on the first floor, the cafe has a total floor space of approximately 100 square meters with about 50 seats.

A red carpet adds a touch of glamour, while the tables and chairs were brought from the old governor’s official residence.

Food and drinks are served on Kiyomizu ware plates and cups, as well as vintage dishes from abroad.

One particularly intriguing teacup features the face of a woman when the base is held up to the light.

We welcome people posting photos on social media, and hope it helps to spread the word,” said an official.

The cafe is managed by Maeda Coffee Co. based in the city’s Higashiyama Ward.

A cup of its signature blend coffee, “Ryunosuke,” costs 580 yen ($4), including tax.

The care is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and closed on weekends and holidays.
