AWAJI, Hyogo Prefecture—The anime-themed Nijigen no Mori park here updated an attraction to allow visitors to fight monsters and find treasure boxes while immersed in the world of the popular “Dragon Quest” video game series.

“Our hope is that everyone, from adults well-versed in ‘Dragon Quest’ to children unfamiliar with the title, will feel like they are in the video game,” said a representative of the park operator.

The attraction is designed in the image of “Dragon Quest,” a video game designed by Yuji Horii, who hails from Sumoto, Hyogo Prefecture.

The attraction opened in May 2021. Its first renewal work took a month to complete.

At the upgraded facility, named “Dragon Quest Island: Ancient Demon God and Guided Adventurers,” participants will choose their character from such options as warrior, wizard and gadabout.

As adventurers, they are tasked with retrieving a golden bracelet while battling monsters.

The attraction comprises five zones, including the town, castle, forest and hill, and playing the game will take 90 minutes to two hours, the operator said.

Admission can differ depending on the season.

The fee is 3,400 yen ($25) to 4,000 yen for those 12 or older, and 1,400 yen to 1,600 yen for children between 5 and 11 years old.
