SHARI, Hokkaido--Drift ice moving south in the Sea of Okhotsk reached the coast of the scenic Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido on Feb. 2, according to the Shiretoko National Park Nature Center here.
The area where the Kazu I tour boat sank last April near the Kashuni Falls on the northern side of the peninsula is covered with drift ice. The accident claimed the lives of all 26 people aboard. Twenty bodies have been recovered but six people are still officially listed as missing.
In Abashiri and Monbetsu, both on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido, ice-breaking pleasure boats started operations after ice drifting offshore became visible to the naked eye from the cities several days earlier.
