The high-speed Nozomi bullet train that plies the Tokaido Shinkansen Line will start operating from Shin-Yokohama Station on a limited basis, effective March 18.
Central Japan Railway Co. (JR Tokai) said it expects higher passenger turnout at Shin-Yokohama Station in Kanagawa Prefecture, close to Tokyo, because the new Sotetsu-Tokyu link line will open on March 18.
Operated by Sagami Railway Co. and Tokyu Railways Co., the line connects the central part of Kanagawa with central Tokyo directly through the station.
The updated train schedule calls for the Nozomi Shinkansen to depart from Shin-Yokohama 10 times monthly on average for the time being. Unlike other train services, the number of Nozomi runs could differ, depending on the season and demand, JR Tokai said.
It said the service will start from Shin-Yokohama Station, not Shinagawa Station in Tokyo, at 6:03 a.m., primarily on Mondays and Saturdays.
Officials anticipate that the trains will cater to a growing number of tourists and workers living separately from their families who return home on weekends to be with loved ones and leave early Monday morning for distant workplaces.
The Nozomi Shinkansen departing from Shin-Yokohama is due to arrive in Nagoya and Shin-Osaka in western Japan nine to 10 minutes faster than current bullet trains starting out from Shinagawa.
The temporary Shinkansen service is set to run through June 30, but a JR Tokai representative said the company will “consider continuing the service in July and beyond based on passenger demand.”
