FUKUOKA—Police are searching for a man who stabbed a woman to death on a street near JR Hakata Station here on Jan. 16.
Miki Kawano, 38, a company employee residing in Nakagawa, Fukuoka Prefecture, was found unconscious at the scene in Fukuoka’s Hakata Ward and transported to a hospital.
She was confirmed dead about 40 minutes after the evening attack.
According to investigative sources, the suspect was known to the victim. She had problems with the man in the past and recently consulted a police station near her residence about him, they said.
Prefectural police, who opened a murder investigation, said the suspect was wearing a black jacket and may still be carrying the knife used in the attack.
Kawano suffered multiple slashes and stab wounds in her head, chest and stomach.
Police received a call around 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 16 that said, “A woman has been attacked by a man.”
A witness said a man jumped on top of a woman, while another witness said she heard a woman scream, “Stop!”
Kawano’s workplace is located near the station.
The crime scene is a few-minutes’ walk from the hub station’s Hakata Exit, facing the main Taihaku-dori street.
