KOFU--Mount Fuji is ushering in the start of colder weather in Japan as it sported the season’s first snowcap on Sept. 30, the Kofu Local Meteorological Office announced the same day.

The highly anticipated annual spectacle arrived four days later than last year and two days earlier than in an average year, the office said.

A staff member of the office observed snow at the summit of the 3,776-meter mountain at around 6 a.m.

The lowest temperature at the top of the nation’s tallest mountain dropped below zero on the morning of Sept. 29, the office said.
