Japan Coast Guard cutters and a helicopter in Hokkaido were searching for a pleasure boat with 26 passengers and crew that made an emergency distress call it was taking on water.
The Kazu I operated by Shiretoko Pleasure Boat made the emergency call to the First Regional Coast Guard Headquarters based in Hokkaido at 1:13 p.m. on April 23. The ship was located off the coast of the Shiretoko Peninsula in eastern Hokkaido.
Four Coast Guard cutters and a helicopter, as well as a helicopter operated by Hokkaido police, set off to search for the vessel.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, high waves and strong winds had been buffeting the area where the boat sent the SOS since the morning.
