So many relief supplies for Ukrainians have poured into Tokyo from around Japan that the goods are now being stored in a former nursery school in the capital.

Staff from the Ukrainian Embassy in Minato Ward and volunteers were recently seen sorting through about 90 boxes of donated supplies lined up in two rooms covering 55 square meters at the former school in the ward.

The boxes contained diapers, powdered milk, preserved food, pet food and other items that have been sent to the embassy and other organizations in Tokyo since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24.

Ward officials said the Ukrainian Embassy consulted them last month about locations to temporarily store the supplies.

The ward offered free use of the former nursery school, which is slated for demolition.

“We were encouraged by letters and glad to know that Japanese people want to support Ukraine,” said Olga Suedo-Holtz, who heads Japan-Ukraine Partners Association, a group of Ukrainian residents. “There are many people who need help, so we want to deliver the goods as soon as possible.”
