Tokyo reported 6,430 fresh cases of COVID-19 on March 23 and 14 related fatalities.
The latest daily count was 3,791 fewer than the previous Wednesday and marked the 20th consecutive day of decline from the same day a week earlier, metropolitan health officials said.
The seven-day average of new cases over the week through March 23 came to 6,292.9, representing 75 percent of the figure for the preceding week.
The patients who died ranged in age from their 50s through 90s.
Of the newly confirmed infections, children aged 9 or younger accounted for 1,286 cases, the largest group. They were followed by 1,090 patients in their 40s and 1,053 aged between 10 and 19. Authorities said 1,048 patients were in their 30s and 1,018 in their 20s.
The number of serious cases was down by one to 44 in the capital. The metropolitan government defines serious cases as patients on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung bypass machines.
