For the second straight day, Osaka Prefecture confirmed more fresh cases of COVID-19 than Tokyo.
Osaka prefectural government officials reported 540 new cases while the Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 531 cases on Sept. 23.
On Sept. 22, Osaka had 591 cases, while Tokyo reported 537. Both are covered by a state of emergency that is set to expire on Sept. 30.
Sept. 23 marked the 32nd consecutive day in which fresh COVID-19 cases in Tokyo were below the figure for the same day of the previous week.
For the week ending Sept. 23, the daily average of new cases in Tokyo was 547.4, which was 54.1 percent of the average of the previous week.
Tokyo officials reported 143 cases where patients had symptoms serious enough to require the use of a ventilator or other equipment to breathe. The figure was a decrease of three from the previous day.
Osaka had 173 patients with serious symptoms.
Of the latest cases in Tokyo, 132 involved patients in their 20s, while 99 were in their 30s, 85 in their 40s and 63 in their 50s. Fifty patients were aged between 10 and 19, while 46 were under 10. Officials said 21 patients were in their 60s and 45 were aged 65 or older.
