Toyota Motor Corp. has ordered all its Japanese employees and their families in Russia to return to Japan, the company said March 7.
The order, which it said was issued several days ago, is aimed at 26 Japanese employees based in Russia. The news comes about a week and a half after Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
A Toyota public relations official said the company made the decision based on the “advisory from the Japanese government and in view of the overall situation of its operations” in the country.
The official said it is not known when the employees and their relatives will be able to return and added that those who can prepare to leave should do so now.
The company operates a vehicle assembly factory in St. Petersburg and a sales headquarters in Moscow.
On March 4, Toyota suspended the operation of its factory in St. Petersburg. It also halted the export of vehicles to Russia.
The official said the company will stop sales of its cars in Russia as soon as the inventory runs out.
