SAN FRANCISCO--Filmmaker Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car” won the best picture award in the non-English language category at the 79th Golden Globe Awards, the first time in 62 years for a Japanese movie to clinch the title, according to the film’s distributor.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which hosts the Golden Globe Awards, made the announcement Jan. 9.
“Drive My Car” is an adaptation of novelist Haruki Murakami’s short story of the same name. The cast includes Hidetoshi Nishijima, Toko Miura and Masaki Okada.
The film also got the nod for the best picture, best director, best screenplay and best actor awards from the prestigious National Society of Film Critics in the United States on Jan. 8.
These accolades are widely viewed as a test run for the Academy Awards.
“Drive My Car” became the first Japanese film to win the Best Screenplay Award at the Cannes International Film Festival last year. The movie also snared the International Federation of Film Critics’ Prize.
