For the fifth straight day, Osaka on Sept. 26 logged more COVID-19 cases than heavily populated Tokyo.
Osaka prefectural government officials confirmed 386 fresh cases, while Tokyo reported 299.
Osaka also reported the death of a woman in her 40s and said 169 COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms had been hospitalized.
Tokyo confirmed 129 patients with serious symptoms, a decrease of two from the previous day, and 11 fatalities.
The number of cases of infection in Tokyo dropped by 266 over the previous Sunday. Sept. 26 marked the 35th straight day for the daily tally to remain under the figure for the same day of the previous week.
The daily average of new cases in Tokyo for the week ending Sept. 26 came to 362.7, or 44.5 percent of the average of the previous week.
Of the latest cases in the capital, 74 patients were in their 20s, 60 in their 30s and 40 in their 40s. Authorities said 21 patients were aged 65 or older.
