OSAKA--Osaka Prefecture reported the death of a teenage COVID-19 patient on Sept. 8 in a hospital here, the first time an infected individual under 20 has been confirmed to have died in the prefecture.
According to the health ministry, no COVID-19 patients younger than 20 had been confirmed to have died nationwide as of Aug. 31.
Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said a patient in his late teens who had underlying conditions died on Sept. 7 after receiving treatment in a bed for those with serious symptoms.
The patient had been rushed to a hospital in Osaka on Sept. 1 and tested positive for the novel coronavirus there.
In addition to his pre-existing conditions, he had other factors that put him at risk of becoming seriously ill, according to the prefecture.
In Osaka Prefecture, 2,012 new novel coronavirus infections were confirmed on Sept. 8, more than the 1,834 cases reported in Tokyo.
The number of new COVID-19 cases in the capital fell from week-earlier levels for the 17th consecutive day.
