Tokyo confirmed 1,675 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Sept. 9, down 1,424 from a week ago, and 19 deaths among patients in their 40s to 80s.
It marked the 18th consecutive day for the number of new infections in the capital to drop from the same day a week earlier.
The tally brought the daily average of new infections in Tokyo over the week through Sept. 9 to 1,837.1, or 58.5 percent of the figure for the preceding week.
The average number of diagnostic tests performed in the capital over the three days through Sept. 8 stood at 12,653.3.
The number of serious cases in Tokyo requiring ventilators or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, also known as an ECMO lung bypass machine, dropped by one from the previous day to 251.
Of the 1,675 latest cases, 407 patients were in their 20s, followed by 348 in their 30s, 285 in their 40s and 166 in their 50s. Patients aged between 10 to 19 accounted for 148 cases, while 125 were 65 or older.
