Newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Tokyo hit 1,050 on May 1, up 174 from the previous Saturday, metropolitan government officials said.
The daily average for the one-week period ending May 1 came to 798.3, an 11.8-percent increase over the previous week.
Of the latest cases, 272 patients were in their 20s, 220 in their 30s and 173 in their 40s. People aged 65 or older accounted for 93 cases.
Sixty-three patients displayed serious symptoms that require ventilators or an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) device, which circulates blood through an artificial lung. The figure represents a decrease of two from the previous day.
