Tokyo confirmed 197 new novel coronavirus infections on Aug. 10 as the capital logged a record number of hospitalizations on the day, according to the Tokyo metropolitan government. 

It marked the first time the daily count fell below 200 since July 27, when 131 new cases were confirmed.

At the same time, the number of patients hospitalized for COVID-19 in Tokyo reached 1,601 as of Aug. 9, the highest since May 12. Records kept by the metropolitan government on hospitalized virus patients only go back to that day.

The number of inpatients with severe symptoms on Aug. 10 was 24, a slight increase from the 23 on the previous day.

Among those who tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Aug. 10, those in their 20s led the count with 65. People in their 30s followed with 45.

Both age groups accounted for 56 percent of the total new cases. There were 34 cases among people in their 40s and 22 among people in their 50s.

Eight cases were from young people between 10 to 19. Seven were in their 80s. Six children under 10 tested positive for the virus. Five people each in their 60s and 80s also tested positive.

The daily count that the metropolitan government releases reflects test results from about three days prior. Officials said 3,243 tests were conducted on Aug. 7.
