Tokyo on June 27 recorded the largest number of new COVID-19 infections since the state of emergency was lifted for the capital.

Fifty-seven new cases were confirmed on June 27, sources said.

The state of emergency for Tokyo and the last three surrounding prefectures and the northern main island of Hokkaido was lifted on May 25.

On June 24, Tokyo reported 55 new infections, the first time the daily tally exceeded 50 in 50 days.

The figure hovered around 50 for the next two days, with 48 reported on June 25 and 54 on June 26.

Those figures are all more than double the 20 daily number of new infections that the Tokyo metropolitan government had at one time used as a benchmark to issue an alert to local residents to be more aware of the possibility of a further spread of COVID-19 infections.
