Only five new COVID-19 infections were confirmed in Tokyo on May 19, marking two straight weeks the daily tally in the capital has been under 50, according to sources.

Tokyo remains one of eight prefectures where a state of emergency over the novel coronavirus outbreak remains in place.

The central government plans to convene a meeting of its panel of experts on May 21 to decide if the state of emergency should be lifted for Tokyo and the seven other prefectures.
