Typhoon No. 22 is expected to intensify and could approach the Izu island chain south of Tokyo with a “very strong” force by Oct. 9, the Japan Meteorological Agency warned.
The storm was south of Japan and moving west-northwest at around 15 kph as of 3 a.m. on Oct. 7, the JMA said.
It had a central pressure of 985 hectopascals and was packing maximum sustained winds of about 108 kph and gusts up to 162 kph near its center.
The JMA forecasts Typhoon No. 22 to continue its northwestward trajectory before gradually shifting northeast on Oct. 8 toward the Izu islands.
The Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, should brace for extremely strong winds and rough seas on Oct. 9 and monitor the latest weather updates, the JMA said.
The JMA has issued gale and high-wave warnings for the Kanto-Koshin region, with a particular focus on the Izu islands.
The public is also advised to exercise caution against potential landslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen or overflowing rivers.
