KAMIFURANO, Hokkaido--Leaf peepers are flocking to Mount Tokachi in Hokkaido, one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains, as the foliage is bursting in vibrant fall colors.
But visitors are keeping a wary eye out for bears this season, as sightings and attacks have been on the increase.
“I’m worried about bears this year, but since I can come here by car, I feel safe,” said Sachiko Murata, 65, who drove from Obihiro, Hokkaido, to enjoy the splash of fall colors.
According to the Kamifurano Tokachidake Tourist Association, the hot spring area, at an elevation of 1,280 meters, is expected to offer its peak autumn foliage viewing through this weekend.
