Long-acclaimed Japanese technopop unit Perfume shared Sept. 21 in a post on its official website that it is going on indefinite hiatus starting from 2026.
A portion of the English version stated, “In order to capture this moment when we can proudly say that we are ‘shining,’ we will put Perfume into cold sleep starting in 2026.”
A-chan (Ayaka Nishiwaki), 36, Kashiyuka (Yuka Kashino), 36, and Nocchi (Ayano Omoto), 37, formed the unit in Hiroshima Prefecture back in 1999 and made their mainstream debut in 2005.
“As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we take a closer look at each of our lives for the first time. It's time to discover a new us,” another part of the announcement read.
The unit initially gained popularity with its 2007 track “Polyrhythm” and went on to produce numerous hit songs that include “Laser Beam” and “Flash.”
Perfume has been a staple of the annual “NHK Kohaku Utagassen” New Year's Eve TV special featuring Japan's top artists for 16 consecutive years. The trio has also held concerts overseas and performed at international music festivals.
The group's message to its fans ends on an upbeat note, saying, “We each want to come back more powerful than ever, so we hope you will continue to support us warmly until the day we can meet again.”
