The peak snow period reached and passed the Kanto-Koshin region early on March 5, but heavy snow could continue from the afternoon through the morning of the following day in the Tohoku region.
According to East Japan Railway Co. (JR East), Chuo Line operations between Takao Station in western Tokyo and Kobuchizawa Station in Hokuto, Yamanashi Prefecture, were suspended from the first train on March 5 because the snow knocked a bamboo tree on the track.
Services were resumed before 9 a.m.
Due to the snow, 28 highways and 11 national routes were closed in the Kanto-Koshin region starting in the afternoon of March 4. All closures were lifted by 8 a.m. on March 5.
The snowy weather was caused by a cold air mass and low pressure system passing along the southern coast of the Honshu main island.
