Heavy snowfall is intensifying, particularly in the Hokuriku region, due to the influence of a strong cold air mass. Snow was also forecast in low-lying areas through Feb. 23.
In Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture, 26 centimeters of snow fell in the 6 hours to 5 a.m. on Feb. 22, prompting the Kanazawa Regional Meteorological Observatory to issue updates on significant snowfall at 5:34 am.
The heavy snowfall was expected to continue until before noon. Authorities warned of a growing risk of traffic disruptions in the northern Noto region.
The effects of a low-pressure system were also continuing to be felt in the Tohoku region. Snowfall for the 24-hour period as of 3 p.m. on Feb. 22 was expected to reach 33 cm in Oguni, Yamagata Prefecture, 39 cm in Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture, and 29 cm in Wajima.
Authorities said there was a risk of heavy snowfall in the mountains of northern Kyushu from the night of Feb. 23 to the following morning. The Japan Meteorological Agency forecast 30 cm of snowfall in mountainous areas of Yamaguchi Prefecture over a 24-hour period.
