Heavy snow is forecast for eastern Japan and mountainous areas on the Sea of Japan side of western Japan through Dec. 29.

The Japan Meteorological Agency cited a winter pressure pattern and a cold air mass for what it said could develop into warning-level snowfall.

Cold temperatures are expected to intensify from Jan. 1 to 3 as well.

The JMA is urging people to remain vigilant against traffic disruptions and snow landing on power lines and trees.

As of 4 p.m. on Dec. 27, the agency said 308 centimeters of snow had accumulated in the Sukayu district of Aomori, the capital of Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan.

In Tsunan town, Niigata Prefecture, 166 cm of snow had accumulated.

Other areas also experienced heavy snowfall.

JMA said the main island of Honshu will be blanketed with very cold air through Dec. 29 due to temperatures of minus 30 degrees approximately 5,500 meters above the area.

During the 24 hour-period until 6 p.m. on Dec. 28, it forecast 80 cm of snowfall in the Hokuriku region, 60 cm in Tokai region and 50 cm in Kanto Koshin and Chugoku regions.
