Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko are set to embark on an official visit to Turkey commemorating the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

During a news conference on Nov. 25, the couple expressed excitement about their first visit to the country, scheduled for Dec. 3 to 8.

Fumihito, the brother of Emperor Naruhito, described Turkey as a crossroads of civilizations, playing a significant role in the current Middle East situation.

He also highlighted the historical ties between Japan and Turkey, citing the 1890 sinking of the frigate Ertugrul, the 1985 evacuation of Japanese nationals from Tehran, mutual aid for earthquake damages and the ongoing archaeological project at Kaman-Kalehoyuk.

“It is an immense pleasure to visit a country with which Japan has such a great relationship,” he said.

Kiko, who wore a brooch adorned with traditional Turkish oya lace, expressed her hope that the visit would deepen mutual understanding and strengthen ties between the two nations.

The couple also revealed that they have been encouraging their son, Prince Hisahito, to study abroad.

Fumihito, who studied at Oxford University, emphasized the importance of experiencing a different culture to gain a new perspective on ones own.

“Such an experience would broaden my son’s horizons,” he said.

Hisahito himself has recently expressed a growing interest in studying abroad, according to the couple.
